Lakewood Injury Cases We Handle
Lakewood Personal Injury at a Glance
- Core corridors: I-605 San Gabriel River Freeway forming the eastern boundary with Cerritos, Lakewood Boulevard as the principal north-south arterial bisecting the city, Del Amo Boulevard as the principal east-west arterial running across the city’s middle, Carson Street, South Street, Centralia Street, Candlewood Street, Bellflower Boulevard along the western boundary, Woodruff Avenue, and Paramount Boulevard.
- Court venue: Lakewood civil and criminal matters route to the Bellflower Courthouse at 10025 E. Flower Street in Bellflower, which serves the Southeast District and covers Lakewood, Bellflower, Paramount, and Hawaiian Gardens; unlimited civil personal injury cases (any case seeking more than $35,000 under Code of Civil Procedure section 85) are filed in the district where the collision occurred and assigned for all purposes to an Independent Calendar department; the Spring Street Personal Injury Hub stopped receiving new personal injury filings on January 8, 2024.
- Law enforcement: Lakewood does not maintain its own police department and contracts patrol services with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department; LASD Lakewood Station at 5130 N. Clark Avenue in Lakewood investigates city-street collisions on Lakewood Boulevard, Del Amo Boulevard, Carson Street, South Street, Woodruff Avenue, and the other Lakewood arterials, while the California Highway Patrol investigates collisions on the I-605.
- Demographics: Approximately 80,000 residents across roughly 9.5 square miles in a planned mid-century suburb laid out around the Lakewood Mall and Lakewood Country Club; intake is conducted in English and Spanish-language interpreter support is available throughout the case.
- Notable case pattern: The September 27, 2024 fatal bicycle collision on Del Amo Boulevard at Norwalk Boulevard at approximately 8:30 a.m. (cyclist struck after a school bus and a Honda Civic collided, per Arash Law and ABC7 Los Angeles reporting) is illustrative of the catastrophic-injury risk on Lakewood’s east-west arterials during morning peak periods.
Yaghmai Law Firm represents individuals and families injured in Lakewood, California – the planned post-war suburb of Southeast Los Angeles County bordered by Bellflower to the west, Cerritos to the east across the I-605, Hawaiian Gardens to the southeast, Long Beach to the south, and Paramount to the northwest. Lakewood was laid out on a roughly orthogonal street grid around the Lakewood Mall and the Lakewood Country Club, which means the city’s injury-collision pattern is dominated by long-arterial crashes on Lakewood Boulevard, Del Amo Boulevard, Carson Street, South Street, and Woodruff Avenue rather than freeway crashes – although the I-605 along the eastern boundary contributes a separate stream of high-energy freeway collisions to our caseload. Houtan Yaghmai, Esq., President and Managing Attorney, handles every Lakewood file personally – from initial scene reconstruction (LASD Lakewood Station for city streets, CHP Santa Fe Springs Area for the I-605) through demand, mediation, and trial preparation.
Lakewood is one of several Southeast LA County cities that does not maintain its own police department and instead contracts patrol services with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department – the same arrangement Compton, Carson, Cerritos, and Norwalk use. That single fact changes how a Lakewood injury investigation runs: city-street collisions are documented through LASD Lakewood Station at 5130 N. Clark Avenue rather than a Lakewood city police department, and the report-retrieval workflow runs through the LASD records system instead of a city records desk. We have direct working relationships with the LASD Lakewood records desk and can usually get a Lakewood city-street collision report within 7 to 10 business days from request. For I-605 freeway collisions in the Lakewood band, the investigating agency is the California Highway Patrol Santa Fe Springs Area office, and we file the CHP report request immediately so the basic collision report is in hand within roughly 10 business days, with the Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team supplemental report (on catastrophic crashes) tracked separately because it can take six to twelve months to release.
We are a Sherman Oaks-based firm but we have built our Lakewood practice around a remote-first intake model that does not require Lakewood clients to drive forty minutes up the I-605 and across to the I-405 to reach our office. Initial consultations are by phone, text, secure video, or e-signed documents; medical record requests, LASD Lakewood Station report retrieval, and CHP collision report ordering are all handled by our team in-house. When a Lakewood file goes to litigation we appear at the Bellflower Courthouse (Southeast District, 10025 E. Flower Street in Bellflower) on motions in limited civil and at the courthouse for the district where the case is filed for unlimited civil personal injury matters.

Types of Lakewood Personal Injury Cases We Handle
The Lakewood files Yaghmai Law Firm sees fall into six recurring patterns. Each pattern has its own evidence-collection rhythm, its own defendant set, and its own typical valuation arc – so when we open a Lakewood intake we are already routing the file toward one of these tracks within the first 48 hours.
- Del Amo Boulevard arterial crashes. Del Amo Boulevard is the principal east-west arterial through Lakewood, running from Long Beach across to Cerritos and beyond, and it carries some of the highest volume of the city’s surface traffic. The September 27, 2024 fatal cyclist collision at the Del Amo Boulevard at Norwalk Boulevard intersection at approximately 8:30 a.m. (a cyclist was struck and killed after a school bus and a Honda Civic collided at the intersection, per Arash Law and ABC7 Los Angeles reporting) is representative of the corridor’s risk profile during morning peak. Del Amo files frequently involve left-turn-into-oncoming crashes at the permissive-phase signalized intersections (Vehicle Code 21801(a)), red-light running collisions (Vehicle Code 21453), and pedestrian and cyclist strikes during the morning school-arrival window when the LBUSD and ABC Unified bus routes are running. We pull Los Angeles County Public Works signal-timing records, LASD Lakewood Station traffic collision reports, and any nearby private-business camera footage within 48 hours of intake.
- Lakewood Boulevard north-south arterial crashes. Lakewood Boulevard is the city’s namesake corridor, running north-south as a four-to-six-lane divided arterial connecting Bellflower and Downey to Long Beach. It carries a high concentration of commercial vehicle traffic feeding the Long Beach airport and Boeing Long Beach industrial campus, plus rideshare drivers running between Long Beach Airport and points north. Recurring crash patterns: rear-end collisions at signalized intersections (Lakewood Boulevard at Del Amo, at Carson Street, at South Street, and at Candlewood Street are the highest-incidence signalized intersections), left-turn broadside crashes during commute peaks, and pedestrian strikes at non-signalized mid-block crossings. We pull LASD Lakewood Station collision reports, signal-timing records, and any nearby commercial camera footage on every Lakewood Boulevard case.
- I-605 San Gabriel River Freeway crashes. I-605 forms the eastern boundary of Lakewood (with Cerritos on the opposite side) with on/off ramps at Del Amo Boulevard, Carson Street, South Street, and the SR-91 interchange. The corridor is a primary commuter and freight artery between the Long Beach port complex and the San Gabriel Valley, and it crosses the SR-91 just north of Lakewood at the busiest freeway-to-freeway interchange in the area. CHP Santa Fe Springs Area is the investigating agency. The recurring crash patterns are rear-end chain collisions during morning and evening commuter peaks, lane-change side-swipes near the SR-91 interchange weave, and high-energy single-vehicle fixed-object crashes during off-peak hours. We pull EDR data, CHP CAD logs, MAIT supplemental reports when available, and dashcam footage from Caltrans freeway-management cameras within 48 hours of intake.
- Carson Street and South Street east-west arterial crashes. Carson Street and South Street are the two secondary east-west arterials through Lakewood, running parallel to Del Amo Boulevard. Carson Street carries traffic into the Long Beach Airport area and Boeing Long Beach campus; South Street feeds traffic between Cerritos and Long Beach. Both corridors have signalized intersections at Lakewood Boulevard, Bellflower Boulevard, Woodruff Avenue, Paramount Boulevard, and Pioneer Boulevard, and crashes cluster at those signals. Left-turn-into-oncoming collisions under permissive left-turn phasing and red-light running collisions dominate the liability theories. We pull LASD Lakewood Station traffic collision reports, Los Angeles County Public Works signal-timing records, and toxicology screens where DUI is suspected.
- Pedestrian and bicycle crashes citywide. Lakewood is a low-density planned suburb laid out around the Lakewood Country Club and Lakewood Mall, with substantial pedestrian and bicycle activity along the residential collector streets and at the signalized arterials. The September 27, 2024 Del Amo at Norwalk Boulevard fatality is the most recent verified cyclist fatal in the public reporting record. Pedestrian strikes cluster at signalized crosswalks where left-turning vehicles fail to yield (Vehicle Code 21950 yield-to-pedestrian-in-crosswalk) and at non-signalized mid-block crossings. We work up these cases with crosswalk-marking documentation, sight-distance analysis, and Los Angeles County Public Works pedestrian-signal-timing records.
- Rideshare, delivery, and uninsured motorist Lakewood cases. Lakewood sits between Long Beach Airport and the SR-91 / I-605 freeway network, which makes it a significant rideshare and last-mile delivery corridor. Uber and Lyft drivers running Long Beach Airport to Cerritos, Downey, and Norwalk pickups, plus Amazon, FedEx, and UPS delivery operations along the residential streets, generate a steady stream of intake files. Rideshare crashes in Period 2 (en route to passenger) or Period 3 (passenger on board) trigger a one-million-dollar per-incident commercial liability layer under California Public Utilities Code 5440-5444; delivery-vehicle crashes trigger Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration spoliation if the vehicle is over 10,001 pounds gross vehicle weight rating. For uninsured-driver Lakewood crashes, we pull the client’s auto policy declarations page on every intake to confirm UM/UIM coverage limits under Insurance Code 11580.2 and stacking eligibility before opening the recovery file.
Why Lakewood Cases Need a Personal Injury Attorney
Lakewood personal injury cases are not a fungible commodity. The defendants, the insurance carriers, the investigating agencies, and the discoverable evidence layer all change depending on where in Lakewood the crash happened and what type of vehicle was involved.
On the I-605 the investigating agency is the California Highway Patrol Santa Fe Springs Area. CHP collision reports run a different format and timeline than LASD reports – the basic collision report is usually available within 10 business days, but the Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) supplemental report on catastrophic crashes can take six to twelve months and often is not released until after litigation has begun. We track CHP report release dates internally and refile public records requests if the initial release is incomplete or if the supplemental MAIT report has not arrived by the discovery deadline.
On the city streets – Lakewood Boulevard, Del Amo Boulevard, Carson Street, South Street, Centralia Street, Candlewood Street, Bellflower Boulevard, Woodruff Avenue, and Paramount Boulevard – the investigating agency is the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lakewood Station at 5130 N. Clark Avenue, which provides contract law enforcement to Lakewood. LASD Lakewood Station files traffic collision reports through the LASD records system. We work directly with the LASD Lakewood records desk on report retrieval and can usually get a Lakewood city-street collision report in 7 to 10 business days from request, and we cross-reference the report number against the city’s Public Records Act response if signal-timing or traffic-engineering records are also needed.
Insurance carrier mix in Lakewood skews heavily toward State Farm, Mercury, Geico, Progressive, and AAA for personal-line auto policies, with a notable share of Bristol West, Anchor General, and California Casualty in the non-standard-auto submarket. On commercial lines we routinely encounter Old Republic, Travelers, Sentry, and Liberty Mutual on the regional fleet operators running Long Beach Airport and Boeing campus deliveries, plus Progressive Commercial on smaller last-mile delivery operators. Each carrier has its own claims-handling rhythm and its own evaluation algorithm; the Lakewood file that gets settled is the one where the demand package is structured to that specific carrier’s template, with claim values supported by the medical records and economic analysis the carrier’s reserve committee expects to see.
Compensation in Lakewood Personal Injury Cases
Lakewood personal injury verdicts and settlements follow Los Angeles County personal injury valuation norms but with two Lakewood-specific adjustments worth flagging.
Venue valuation. Unlimited civil personal injury cases (any case worth more than $35,000 under Code of Civil Procedure section 85) are filed in the district where the injury occurred, based on the address and zip code of the crash, and assigned for all purposes to an Independent Calendar department that manages the case from filing through trial. The Bellflower Courthouse at 10025 E. Flower Street handles limited civil (under $35,000), criminal, family law, and probate for the Southeast District.
Wage-loss arithmetic for Lakewood’s commuter workforce. Lakewood is a long-commute suburb: a substantial share of Lakewood residents commute to downtown Long Beach, the Long Beach Airport campus, Boeing Long Beach, the South Bay aerospace cluster, and downtown Los Angeles. That means past-and-future lost earnings claims on a Lakewood file frequently turn on commute-dependent positions where a soft-tissue injury or a moderate orthopedic injury creates real wage loss that a non-commuter plaintiff would not have. We retain a vocational economist on every Lakewood case with a meaningful wage-loss component, and we document the client’s commute mileage and time-of-day patterns to support both economic and non-economic damage claims.
Recoverable damage categories in a Lakewood personal injury case track California Civil Jury Instructions (CACI) 3900-series: past and future medical expenses, past and future lost earnings (including loss of earning capacity), past and future pain and suffering, mental anguish, loss of enjoyment of life, and – in wrongful death cases – loss of love, companionship, comfort, care, assistance, protection, affection, society, moral support, and (in survival actions) the decedent’s pre-death pain and suffering plus economic loss.
California Law That Applies to Lakewood Personal Injury Cases
The Lakewood personal injury file lives at the intersection of statewide California statutory law and case law. The core authorities we cite in nearly every Lakewood demand package and complaint:
Negligence per se. Most Lakewood vehicle-on-vehicle cases run a Vehicle Code violation as the predicate for negligence per se under Evidence Code 669. The most common Lakewood-applicable violations are CVC 22350 (basic speed law), CVC 21703 (following too closely), CVC 21801 (left turn yield – especially relevant on Lakewood Boulevard and Del Amo Boulevard permissive-left intersections), CVC 21453 (red light), CVC 21950 (yield to pedestrian in crosswalk – the predicate violation in the September 2024 Del Amo at Norwalk fatality and many similar Lakewood pedestrian and bicycle strikes), CVC 22107 (unsafe lane change), and on I-605 commercial-truck cases, CVC 34500-34520 (commercial vehicle standards) plus 49 C.F.R. Part 395 (hours-of-service) and Part 396 (vehicle maintenance).
Statute of limitations. Code of Civil Procedure 335.1 sets a two-year limitation for personal injury. Government Code 911.2 sets a six-month claim-presentation deadline if any public entity is potentially liable – for example, Caltrans for an I-605 roadway-design or signage claim, Los Angeles County Public Works for a signal-timing claim on Del Amo Boulevard or Lakewood Boulevard, or the City of Lakewood itself for a sidewalk-defect or public-property hazard claim. Missing the six-month government-claim deadline ordinarily extinguishes any claim against that public entity, even though the two-year private-party deadline is still open.
Comparative fault. California uses pure comparative negligence per Li v. Yellow Cab Co. (1975) 13 Cal.3d 804. Even a Lakewood plaintiff judged 90 percent at fault can still recover 10 percent of damages; insurance carrier early valuations frequently overstate plaintiff comparative fault and we challenge that allocation at every step.
Damage caps and apportionment. Civil Code 1431.2 (Proposition 51) apportions non-economic damages by fault among multiple defendants; economic damages remain jointly and severally liable. MICRA (Civil Code 3333.2, with the 2023 indexing) caps non-economic damages only in medical malpractice and does not apply to ordinary Lakewood motor-vehicle cases.
Local Driving Routes and Hazards in Lakewood
These are the recurring Lakewood corridors and intersections we screen for whenever we open a new file. If your crash happened on one of these, we already know the road geometry, the signal phasing, and the historical incident pattern – which compresses the investigation timeline by weeks.
- Del Amo Boulevard east-west through Lakewood (Bellflower Blvd to I-605). Del Amo Boulevard is the principal east-west arterial through Lakewood, carrying traffic from Bellflower across the city to the I-605 interchange and east into Cerritos. The Del Amo Boulevard at Norwalk Boulevard intersection is the recurring choke-point – the September 27, 2024 fatal cyclist collision at approximately 8:30 a.m. (a cyclist was killed after a school bus and a Honda Civic collided at the intersection, per Arash Law and ABC7 Los Angeles reporting) is the most recent verified fatal at this exact intersection. LASD Lakewood Station investigates Del Amo crashes; we pull the traffic collision report, the Los Angeles County Public Works signal-timing record for the involved signal, and any nearby private-business camera footage within 48 hours.
- Lakewood Boulevard north-south arterial through central Lakewood. Lakewood Boulevard is the city’s namesake corridor, running north-south as a four-to-six-lane divided arterial connecting Bellflower and Downey to Long Beach. It carries commercial vehicle traffic feeding the Long Beach Airport and Boeing Long Beach campus and a steady stream of rideshare traffic between Long Beach Airport and points north. Recurring crash patterns: rear-end collisions at signalized intersections (Lakewood Boulevard at Del Amo, at Carson Street, at South Street, and at Candlewood Street are the highest-incidence signals), left-turn broadside crashes during commute peaks, and pedestrian strikes at non-signalized mid-block crossings. LASD Lakewood Station is the investigating agency on every Lakewood Boulevard city-street collision.
- I-605 San Gabriel River Freeway eastern boundary. I-605 forms Lakewood’s eastern boundary with Cerritos and carries primary commuter and freight traffic between the Long Beach port complex and the San Gabriel Valley. On/off ramps in the Lakewood band serve Del Amo Boulevard, Carson Street, and South Street, and the SR-91 interchange just north of Lakewood is one of the busiest freeway-to-freeway weaves in the area. CHP Santa Fe Springs Area investigates I-605 collisions in the Lakewood band. Recurring crash patterns: rear-end chain collisions during commuter peaks, lane-change side-swipes at the SR-91 interchange weave, and single-vehicle fixed-object crashes during off-peak hours. We pull EDR data, CHP CAD logs, and Caltrans freeway-management camera footage within 48 hours.
- Carson Street and South Street secondary east-west arterials. Both corridors have signalized intersections at Lakewood Boulevard, Bellflower Boulevard, Woodruff Avenue, Paramount Boulevard, and Pioneer Boulevard. The dominant liability theories are left-turn-into-oncoming under permissive left-turn phasing (CVC 21801(a)) and red-light running (CVC 21453). LASD Lakewood Station is the investigating agency; we pull traffic collision reports and Los Angeles County Public Works signal-timing records on every Carson Street and South Street case.

Why Hire Yaghmai Law Firm for a Lakewood Personal Injury Case
Lakewood clients pick us for the same reason clients across Southeast LA County pick us: small enough that the lead attorney handles the file directly, large enough that we have the medical, accident-reconstruction, and economic-expert relationships to take a case to verdict if the carrier refuses fair value. Houtan Yaghmai, Esq., does not delegate Lakewood files to junior associates or paralegal-driven document mills.
“A lot of people call me after they have tried to handle the insurance company themselves and felt stuck. That is exactly when most cases need a lawyer.”
— Houtan Yaghmai, Esq., President & Managing Attorney
We handle every Lakewood file remotely by default – phone, secure video, e-signature – so a Lakewood client recovering from a Del Amo Boulevard or I-605 crash does not have to drive forty minutes up the I-605 and across to the I-405 to our Sherman Oaks office to retain counsel. Intake is fast, the fee structure is contingency (we are paid only out of recovery), and Houtan personally signs every demand package that leaves the firm.
Lakewood Car Accident Lawyer
Car accident claims make up the bulk of the injury work we handle for Lakewood clients. The I-605 / SR-91 interchange on the east side of the city, the Lakewood Boulevard and Del Amo Boulevard signals, and the retail traffic circulating around Lakewood Center produce a steady mix of rear-end, broadside, and merge collisions. Jurisdiction is split between the LA County Sheriff Lakewood Station on city streets and the CHP on the 605 and 91, and getting the correct report from the correct agency is step one in every case.
Insurers move quickly on these claims, and the first valuation is rarely the real number. We collect the collision report, scene photos, and nearby camera footage before retention windows close, and we deal with the adjusters so you can focus on treatment. No fee unless we recover.

Lakewood Personal Injury Frequently Asked Questions
Which courthouse hears my Lakewood personal injury case?
It depends on the case value. Limited civil cases (under $35,000) and most criminal, family law, and probate matters for Lakewood residents are heard at the Bellflower Courthouse, located at 10025 E. Flower Street, Bellflower, CA 90706 – this is the Southeast District seat covering Lakewood, Bellflower, Paramount, Cerritos, and Hawaiian Gardens. Unlimited civil personal injury cases (any case worth more than $35,000 under Code of Civil Procedure section 85) are filed in the district where the collision occurred, based on the address and zip code of the crash, and assigned for all purposes to an Independent Calendar department (Local Rule 2.3; Civil Case Cover Sheet Addendum, form CIV 109, reason 4). The Spring Street Personal Injury Hub stopped receiving new personal injury filings on January 8, 2024.
My crash happened on the I-605 in Lakewood. Who investigates?
California Highway Patrol Santa Fe Springs Area investigates I-605 freeway collisions through the Lakewood band. CHP reports take longer than LASD reports – the basic collision report is usually available within 10 business days, but the Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) supplemental report on catastrophic crashes can take six to twelve months. We file the initial report request immediately and track the MAIT release timeline so we are not surprised by late-released physical-evidence findings. For a catastrophic I-605 crash we also send a Caltrans freeway-management camera preservation letter within 48 hours because Caltrans purges its rolling camera buffer on a short cycle.
Does Lakewood have its own police department, or does the Sheriff handle city-street collisions?
Lakewood does not maintain its own police department and contracts patrol services with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. LASD Lakewood Station at 5130 N. Clark Avenue, Lakewood, CA 90712 investigates city-street collisions on Lakewood Boulevard, Del Amo Boulevard, Carson Street, South Street, Centralia Street, Candlewood Street, Bellflower Boulevard, Woodruff Avenue, Paramount Boulevard, and the other Lakewood arterials. Traffic collision reports are filed through the LASD records system; we request them by case number and date of incident. We have direct working relationships with the LASD Lakewood records desk and can usually get a Lakewood report in 7-10 business days from request.
I was hit by a cyclist or hit a pedestrian on Del Amo Boulevard or Lakewood Boulevard. What evidence do you preserve first?
Pedestrian and bicycle cases on Lakewood’s arterials require fast evidence work because signal-timing records and nearby camera footage have short retention windows. Within 48 hours of intake we pull: the LASD Lakewood Station traffic collision report, the Los Angeles County Public Works signal-timing record for the involved signalized intersection, any nearby private-business camera footage from gas stations or retail centers along the corridor, and the school-route information if the crash occurred during morning arrival hours – the September 27, 2024 Del Amo at Norwalk Boulevard cyclist fatality occurred at 8:30 a.m. and the school-bus routing record was material to liability allocation. We pair this with a CVC 21950 (yield to pedestrian in crosswalk) negligence-per-se theory under Evidence Code 669 if the pedestrian was in a marked or unmarked crosswalk.
How long do I have to file a Lakewood personal injury claim?
For most Lakewood personal injury cases against a private party (driver, business, property owner), you have two years from the date of injury to file a lawsuit, under California Code of Civil Procedure 335.1. That said, if any public entity is potentially liable – Caltrans for an I-605 roadway-design or signage claim, Los Angeles County Public Works for a signal-timing claim on Del Amo Boulevard or Lakewood Boulevard, or the City of Lakewood itself for a sidewalk-defect or public-property hazard – California Government Code 911.2 requires a written claim presented to the public entity within six months of the incident. Missing the six-month government-claim deadline ordinarily extinguishes any claim against that public entity, even though the two-year private-party deadline is still open.
Do I need to come to Sherman Oaks to retain Yaghmai Law Firm if I live in Lakewood?
No. We handle Lakewood intake remotely by default – phone or text for initial consultation, secure video for client meetings, e-signature for retainer agreements. We send a courier or pick up documents in person if a Lakewood client has physical paperwork (police reports already received, medical records, prior insurance correspondence) that cannot be scanned. Initial consultations cost nothing, our fees are contingency-only (we are paid out of recovery, not out of pocket), and a Lakewood client recovering from a Del Amo Boulevard, Lakewood Boulevard, or I-605 crash does not have to drive up to our Sherman Oaks office to retain counsel.
